When the skin is over exposed to the ultraviolet radiation of the sun, sun burn occurs. Too much of exposure to the sun causes inflammation of the skin. Continued years of overexposure to the sun can be very dangerous leading to developing malignant melanoma. Chronic sun exposure also causes premature wrinkling and aging of the skin. Sunburn is accompanied by nausea, blisters, dizziness, peeling of the skin and sensitivity to light.
Let us look the natural way of treating sunburn below:
- Use coconut oil and sandalwood oil over the burnt skin as they have cooling properties.
- You can also apply a little fresh cream on the sunburned skin. Or else apply a cloth dipped in milk on the affected area.
- Make a paste using four tablespoon buttermilk and two teaspoon tomato juice and and apply on the face. After about half an hour, wash off. It is an effective home remedy for sunburn.
- Mix turmeric, barley, and yogurt in equal proportions. Apply it over the sunburn areas.
- A thin paste of sandalwood applied to the sunburn area is beneficial.
- Apply slices of onion on forehead. This has a very cooling effect.
- Apply pure aloe vera gel.
- Rub mustard oil on the affected skin and allow to it dry. This will reduce the heat from the skin.
- Apply fresh cucumber slices on the affected areas.
- Apply apple cider vinegar to the burnt skin using cotton ball.
- Take some water in a bowl and put lettuce leaves in it. Boil it. Once it has cooled down, strain the liquid and apply it on the affected area, using cotton balls.
- In a blender, mix 2 tomatoes and 1 cucumber and make a puree. To this, add a few drops of lemon juice. Apply this paste over the suntanned and sun-burnt skin. Once dry, dab the puree once again. Repeat the process few times. It would help remove the burn and also add a glow to the skin.
- Boil some cabbage leaves and mash them. Apply the mashed cabbage over the sun-burnt areas. Wash off it after 15 minutes.
- In 3 tablespoons of milk, add 1 tbsp of turmeric powder. Apply this all over the affected area. Once dry, wet it a little and rub in circular motions, before rinsing it off with cool water.
- Before and after showering apply coconut or neem oil on your body. It is also very useful remedy for sunburn.
Cold Water Bath
- For large sunburn areas, go for a cool bath. Cool water compresses are very effective.
- Fill a bathtub with cold water and mix one pound of baking soda or oatmeal in it. Soak in the bath for half an hour.
- Take herbal bath; put few drops of chamomile and lavender essential oils in bath water.
- Take epsom salt or ice compress.
- Before bathing, pour a cup of white cider vinegar into the bathtub and enjoy a long bath. This would provide relief from the sunburn.
Watch Your Diet
- Drink lot of fluids to prevent dehydration.
- Avoid hot pungent and spicy foods.
- Have little juice of raw mango along with salt and sugar. Have this twice or thrice a day.
- Eat lots of lean, and high quality protein foods.
- Also include raw fruits to get the required vitamins and minerals. Vitamin E and Vitamin C diet are very helpful in curing sunburn.
- Tomato is a good antioxidant.
- Eat good quality protein foods like egg, fish, meat, chicken and so on.
- Avoid diets high in omega-6 polyunsaturated fats (such as safflower, sunflower, and other vegetable oils). Such are more prone to have sun-damaged skin.
How to Prevent Sunburn?
- Minimize your exposure to sunlight.
- Mix olive oil with some vinegar and apply before bath.
- Avoid being outdoors between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, when the UV rays are more intense.
- When you are outside, wear a hat, sunglasses that protect your eyes from UV rays, light colored and light weight clothing .
- Use sunscreen lotion with SPF 30 and above. Make sure you buy a sunscreen that contains protection against both UVA and UVB rays. It is better if you use sun screen with natural ingredients like plant oils, and antioxidant vitamins E and C.
- Do not use harsh soaps to wash sun burn. Wash the affected area with an antibacterial soap to prevent secondary infection.
- Do not apply any creams, butter, petroleum jelly or any other greasy substance to a sunburn. They only cause more damage by trapping the heat and can make a burn deeper.
- Avoid products made from benzocaine, lidocaine and petroleum jelly.
